Inclusive and Sustainable Urban Growth: Challenges for Peshawar
Speakers at a seminar urged the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government to devise an overall plan for the inclusive and sustainable urban growth and development of its provincial capital, Peshawar. The seminar on “Inclusive and Sustainable Urban Growth: Challenges for Peshawar” was jointly organized by Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI), Overseas Development Institute (ODI) and Internal Displacement Monitoring Center (IDMC). The experts said Peshawar has endured a huge influx of Afghan refugees and other displaced communities during the past three decades that resulted in rapid increase in population and demand for services. Although provision of basic needs and services to citizens is the primary responsibility of the government, it should also ensure and extend its support to displaced persons for their livelihoods and access to basic services through infrastructure development in refugees’ areas.
